Pre-season notes : Manchester City navigated a prolonged Liverpool challenge to secure the title and bring genuine world class talent in every position. The spine, Hart-Kompany-Toure-Aguero would walk into any team and manager Pellegrini has shored up with GK Caballero, defender Sagna, midfielders Fernando and Lampard (loan) while aiming up on Mangala as an elite partner for Kompany. They're most successful running a modified 4-2-4 where the front is afforded license inside the opponent back third, and while Pelllegrini will mix it up to suit, expect them to go close to top leading scorer again after getting through a testing first month.

Pre-season notes : Aston Villa commenced with a super 3-1 over Arsenal but ended narrowly avoiding the drop and in real danger again with owner Lerner unwilling to sink capital into the transfer market as he struggles to find a buyer. They've picked up Richardson, N'Zogbia, Senderos, and Hutton on the cheap. Lambert favoured a kind of 4-1-2-3 with Weimann and Agbonlahor operating off target man Benteke but they need a much better return off the latter to continue to afford that. They've a decision around World Cup star Vlaar, cash in or convince him to stay, and while the pre-season has been a dud they at least don't see high flyers the first three.
